   In 1540 Coronado and hundreds of Spanish fortune hunters and soldiers set sail for the New World. They were in search of "cities of gold", sighted by earlier explorers. Coronado and his men never found the "cities of gold" but claimed a large section of land in the southwestern part of the United States.
